Many students are busy here in the classroom and planning out their schedule - so these assignments will be accepted until Friday at 3:00. This, however, is the end of Term 5 so no work will be accepted Monday and that may ruin their grade for Term 5.

The I-90 Wildlife Bridges Coalition and the Washington State Department of Transportation are looking for creative elementary students (grades K-5) to participate in the eighth annual Bridging Futures Art and Essay Contest. The contest helps the Bridges Coalition and WSDOT educate the public about the importance of protecting both motorists and wildlife on our state's highways.
To participate in the contest, students must create drawings that show how fish and wildlife can safely cross highways. Students must also submit a short essay explaining their drawing and answer the question: Why is it important to consider animals when designing our roadways?
Get creative! We've seen some amazing ideas over the past eight years - from wildlife crossing guards and stop signs to wildlife bridges over and under the highway.
WSDOT and the Bridges Coalition will honor the top two contest winners with a framed copy of their artwork and fun prizes. The teachers of the top two winning students will receive a $200 cash prize to be used for their classroom. The top 10 pieces of artwork from the contest will be exhibited in businesses and at rest areas along the I-90 corridor and possibly featured at a community event at the Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum.
Submissions need to be postmarked by April 20, 2012.
Send your submissions to:

**Map time will be given at school and is due Thursday/Friday, January 19/20. Students may work on the map at home and can begin their poster about their state as well. Students could come ready with more detailed maps off Grolier if they cannot see mountains, etc. from the maps provided already - use scoring guide to see what is expected.
As discussed in class IF the student has decided to type this paper on their own then follow these expectations:
*state research paper needs a cover page as directed in class
*draft should be in size 12, New Times Roman - no fancy stuff or color, double spaced, no heading,
*use TAB to indent
*Bibliography on separate page titled "Bibliography" three more sources cited correctly using "Citation Machine" (google or on school library website) more than three citations can have just the title of the article and the URL - biblilography is in alphabetical order. Students have a bookmark of cites to use.
* staple together in the top left corner and turned into the alpha-sorter
*Accepted Tuesday in class
If hand-writing the state research paper - write the title page, indent to show where the five paragraphs begin, do not leave an extra space between lines or between paragraphs, and attach the bibliography as directed above.

Requesting any gently used toys in the toy closet, items stored or hiding in a drawar - items that you would usually give to Goodwill or save for the yard sale. The Dollar Store has some fun things as well. Send them our way! Anything that may spark the interest in a 5th grader who either needs a gift for a friend or family member for Christmas or just for themselves goes over very well. Any snack foods/drinks that are prewrapped (and on sale) are a super treat as well.
Accepting donations now for your son/daughter's class box.
