Historical-Fiction Novel Sets - individual reading and research projects for Term 5 - March 12

Projected Due Date - April 10, Tuesday

Practice Presentations - April 10-11, Tuesday/Wednesday

Projected Presentation date: April 12-13, Thursday/Friday

A Family Apart, Ghost Canoe, Canyons, Canyon Winter, A Soldier's Heart, Our Only May Amellia

Criteria - determined upon needs/creativity of the research and project

Students will understand the setting of their book, choose and research a topic of interest stemming from that time and place, prepare a visual (tri-fold, model, game, timeline, map, no individual PowerPoint...) that aids in the understanding of the topic, and present that information as their part of the group's research from prepared notecards written from the individual's research of their topic. A variety of visual aids make for the most interesting and well-rounded of presentations.

1. The students will prepare notecards regarding their research - to be turned in after use in presenting.

2. Labels, pictures/captions, graphs etc., for any visual aid must be typed or printed uniformly and bordered with color as shown in class. No pencil will be accepted - trace in black ink if hand-printed. Think about size - can the words be read from the first or second row? Is it legible? Can the visual aid explain itself?

3. An introduction to the novel and its setting and a conclusion reviewing the main points presented must accompany the presentation so it sounds "whole and complete". Individual participation points to be determined by group members.

Choose research project - be ready to submit one of your three ideas on Monday, March 12.
Bring notecards if you have them as supplies are limited here.

Bridging Futures Art and Essay Contest - open to anyone

The I-90 Wildlife Bridges Coalition and the Washington State Department of Transportation are looking for creative elementary students (grades K-5) to participate in the eighth annual Bridging Futures Art and Essay Contest. The contest helps the Bridges Coalition and WSDOT educate the public about the importance of protecting both motorists and wildlife on our state's highways.

To participate in the contest, students must create drawings that show how fish and wildlife can safely cross highways. Students must also submit a short essay explaining their drawing and answer the question: Why is it important to consider animals when designing our roadways?

Get creative! We've seen some amazing ideas over the past eight years - from wildlife crossing guards and stop signs to wildlife bridges over and under the highway.

WSDOT and the Bridges Coalition will honor the top two contest winners with a framed copy of their artwork and fun prizes. The teachers of the top two winning students will receive a $200 cash prize to be used for their classroom. The top 10 pieces of artwork from the contest will be exhibited in businesses and at rest areas along the I-90 corridor and possibly featured at a community event at the Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum.

Submissions need to be postmarked by April 20, 2012.

Send your submissions to:

Week of January 17-20, 2012

**Due to shortened days and schedules, the final draft will be due Tuesday.

**Library time is scheduled to finalize the bibliography and complete the power point Tuesday. Map time will be given at school and is due Thursday/Friday, January 19/20. Students may work on the map at home next week. Students can come ready with more detailed maps off Grolier if they cannot see mountains, etc. from the maps provided - use scoring guide provided.

As discussed in class ...state research paper needs a cover page; draft should be in size 12, New Times Roman - no fancy stuff or color, double spaced, no heading, TAB to indent; Bibliography on separate page titled "Bibliography" three more sources cited correctly - more than that can have just the title of the article and the URL; stapled together in the top left corner and turned in on your own. Accepted Tuesday in class.

Side note: In December the students wrote fiction stories worthy of publishing. So...each child has kept his/her fiction story for this class book.

And the rules are:
Bring the story back typed, single-spaced, size 12, any font that is clear and still size 12ish, use TAB to indent

"Story Title
by Child's Name"

is centered at the top of the page

*Drawn picture in the white space left on the final page
*Anyone can type it - preferrably the child - but the choice is yours
* checked over by an older sibling/adult for style pointers
*Story is cleaned up for punctuation, spelling and sentence fluency so there are no mistakes others can find
*Due January 27 to be organized and sent up to print
*And... I need a volunteer to organize the finished stories and type up the Table of Contents? Please email me if you can accept this tremendous opportunity!
